Köpenicker Straße thrives on its distinctive mix of alternative art and club culture, gastronomy and industrial architecture. Different agencies and companies from the creative industries have found their home here. And yet, for all its relevance and internationality, this neighborhood always looks a bit unfinished. This creates an atmosphere that magically attracts many new Berliners and new thinkers.
The new office location coe48 fits in perfectly here and not only forms a new street corner, but also a new chapter of urban development: All rooms can be used very flexibly, have a modern, sustainable design, smart building technology and the best views through floor-to-ceiling windows.
The design by Tchoban Voss Architekten for the new residential and office building at the corner of Köpenicker Strasse and Wilhelmine-Gemberg-Weg fulfills a long list of requirements and wishes.
The new building confidently closes the long-standing gap in the cityscape and presents itself as part of the heterogeneous neighborhood in a calm manner. In addition to the spacious, light-flooded rooms thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, tenants can also enjoy the green roof and a newly designed inner courtyard.
The 19 modern apartments, which are located in the quiet Wilhelmine-Gemberg-Weg, are furnished to a high standard, have perfect layouts and are also particularly bright. The apartments on the first floor also have a small garden.
At Köpenicker Strasse 41 / Eiswerk Berlin, we have already initiated Stolperstein commemorative plaques for Raphael Rudolf Baron, Gertrud Baruch, Richard O. Baruch, and Martin Moshe Baruch.
The history of Köpenicker Strasse is long, complex, and impressive. Peter Schwoch, who has been involved with the entire neighborhood in a variety of ways for about two decades, is to be thanked for the Köpenicker Strasse research website, where historical details for the individual addresses may be found. That includes number 48.
Based upon that research, we know that the couple Charlotte and Erich Garske lived here. They sheltered the German Communist Party official Wilhelm Knöchel in their home in 1942. The Garskes were executed in Plötzensee in December 1943.
As a part of our responsibility for the transformation of the site, we submitted a request in 2021 for a Stolperstein commemorative plaque, which is currently on the waiting list of the Stolpersteine Mitte Berlin Initiative.
